Steps to Walking Through Guilt and Self-Condemnation
There is a nasty fact in life that we often wrestle with and fight against; sometimes, we don’t even realize it is affecting our lives in a negative way. Self-blame, false guilt, and self-condemnation. The truth is, every single one of these can be addressed by faith in God’s Word. Each of these hinders our day-to-day lives, often without us recognizing it. We essentially become captive to Satan’s stronghold. To give a real-life example: when a person is kidnapped and held hostage, the captor immediately tries to reinforce the idea that they will be hurt, their family will be harmed, and they will suffer consequences for trying to be free.
Satan does the exact same thing. He is immediate in his actions, leaving no room for time and no space for the Word. He acts right upon salvation—and sometimes long after. Guilt isn’t always bad; it can lead us to repentance and help us forgive. However, self-blame and condemnation only cause destruction because they are from the enemy, whose goal is to "steal, kill, and destroy" (John 10:10). He is already known as the "accuser of the brethren" (Revelation 12:10).
So, what can we do? When we realize we are in this cycle, we can feel hopeless. That is another goal of the enemy: to make us think it’s impossible to get away—to make us feel kidnapped from God’s truth.
1) Faith: Faith is the only thing that can free us from the strongholds of the enemy.
2) Spiritual Acknowledgment: You must acknowledge in prayer that you are dealing with something spiritual rather than natural. You cannot fight what you do not recognize or refuse to approach.
3) Self-Forgiveness: We experience the grace of God through self-forgiveness. Sometimes, all it takes to be free is to forgive ourselves. Self-forgiveness is a powerful tool in tearing down strongholds of guilt and shame.
4) Truth: Without truth, we are hopeless; but with it, we can overcome any demonic stronghold. Just like a kidnapper, the enemy is relentless in his lies. However, we have the truth: we are completely justified by faith (Romans 5:1). Through that justification, we are made right with God. It is by faith, not works—just faith in the truth of God’s Word.
Summary
Satan can be overcome and defeated by the truth of God’s Word. We must believe it and talk to Jesus in prayer. When we approach God, it is like the door of our captivity is being blown open by the wind. In the Bible, wind is often a symbol of the Spirit of God (Acts 2). The door is open for freedom, but remember: the accuser has already lied to you, saying, "You can't get out" or "You deserve this." The truth is that God is forgiving, loving, and accepting. The Spirit will do the work to change anything He desires.
Prayer
God our Father, we pray for full freedom from self-guilt, self-blame, and self-condemnation. We acknowledge these as strongholds in our lives. We also acknowledge the truth: these strongholds are not as strong as the enemy has led us to believe. You are greater, Your truth is effective, and belief will set us free. Lord, increase our faith and give us the grace to come out of the fire of self-blame without being burned. Restore us so we can go and restore others. Thank You, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
